Indoor Plant Killers - Unite!

I maybe a florist and with that I get asked often about plants, but I have to admit I am really good at arranging flowers, but keeping house plants alive has been a work in progress. I have however, over the past 20+ years worked out house plants that work with me and those that don't... So here I am going to share with you great house plants to have if you are a bit of an indoor plant killer!

As you may know, some plants require a geed amount of care, some need perfect conditions, some need heaps of water, some need little at all, and the ones I love are the ones that look after themselves and send out signs when they need a bit of fine lovin'.

In my home currently I have many spathiphyllum - Say what? I hear you say... The peace lily! I love this plant for many reasons.

  1. They are known as an air purifier.

  2. They are a beautiful dark green colour with lush bushy leaves.

  3. They produce simple white flowers.

  4. They don't like sunlight - but like good light.

  5. You can propagate them - split them up when they get to big for their pot and get more plants.

  6. The heat of summer and the cold of winter doesn't seem to bother them.

  7. They are easy to look after - as...

  8. They droop when they need water - to tell me now is a good time to water me.

  9. They love water and can actually live in a vase of water with no soil at all.

As I mentioned they droop when they need water and they love water... So, if you have a plant in soil and it droops, to take the whole pot to the tap, and fill it up until water pools on the top, then depending on the size of the plant or the heat in your room, you can leave them for a month or so, before they start to droop again, telling you they need water.

In the first image below you can see the plant on the right needs water and the one on the left is doing fine... You can also see the plant image 2, in the vase and how it is doing just fine (this is a propagation in progress, as I am waiting for more root grow before I transplant it into a pot)...

Another plant that I have many of is the Spider plant - The Chlorophytum Comosum. This too because many of the points above, however I am yet to try this one alone in a vase of water.

  1. They are a beautiful lush lime green and white varigated colour.

  2. They don't like sunlight - but like good light.

  3. You can propagate them - split them up when they get to big for their pot and get more plants.

  4. They produce babies, that you can simply push into soil and they will grow.

  5. The heat of summer and the cold of winter doesn't seem to bother them.

  6. They are easy to look after - as...

  7. They fade in colour when they need water - to tell me now is a good time to water me.

  8. They love water so you can fill up the pot with water, when they fade in colour.

The third image above shows my three spider plants in need of water - you can see how the colour is faded and not a lush lime green. Once you give them a good water, the colour returns.

The last family of plants I love are succulents... Again easy care! Succulents are what I call desert plants. They like drought conditions, so if you forget to water plants, these are your guys too! Because the have thick fleshy leaves that hold water. They do however like some water but not too much as this can make them rot.

If you love plants and real green in your home like me, but forget to take care of them, then the above plants I recommend as they talk to you and let you know when they need help. Unlike other plants that can be very fickle and any neglect and they are gone, dead, with no hope of revival.
